When Square Enix first announced itsplans to remakeFinal Fantasy 7, many assumed that the game would be a simple redo of the original, but with upgraded graphics to meet modern standards. Instead, Square Enix went in a very different direction, greatly expanding on the original to the point that the story is being told over the course of three games.
The first of these projects wasFinal Fantasy 7 Remake, which earned strong reviews at the time of its original release in 2020. Square Enix is following upFinal Fantasy 7 RemakewithFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which introduces giant open zones to explore, new party members to recruit, and a dizzying amount of content to keep fans busy for the long haul.
TheFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthrelease date is still a few days away at the time of this writing, but the reviews are already out, revealing where exactly the game falls on the list of highest-ratedFinal Fantasygames. According to the review aggregate scoredetermined by Metacritic,Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthis the fifth highest-ratedFFgame to date, sharing a 92 overall rating with the Game Boy Advance version ofFinal Fantasy 6, the PS2 release ofFinal Fantasy 12, and the original release ofFinal Fantasy 10. First place goes to the PS1 classicFinal Fantasy 9, which has a 94 rating.
Highest-Rated Final Fantasy Games
There are a couple of things to point out with this list of highest-ratedFinal Fantasygames. For one, we decided to excludeFinal Fantasy 14’s various expansions, some of which would have cracked the top 10. Secondly, some of the olderFinal Fantasygames released at a time when there weren’t many video game reviews to take into consideration, and so they aren’t listed on Metacritic in a way that accurately reflects how they were received at the time of their release. That’s why the originalFinal Fantasy 7game is nowhere to be seen.
Regardless, it’s clear thatFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthis generally considered one of the best games in the series by those that have already played it. With theFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthrelease datecoming up on February 29, it will be interesting to see how the general public shares the same opinion.
