Stealth builds are one of the staple playstyles in many RPGs, and that includesFallout 4. Sneaking can help you avoid enemies before they can become problems, and even if things do devolve into a gunfight, you’ll still have strong combat options to fall back to.

The following is a guide on how to create a basic Infiltrator build that uses VATS to deal massive critical damage with pistols as the weapon of choice. While it is somewhat of anunderrated build inFallout 4, the Infiltrator setup is great for those who really want to dig into the secret agent/assassin fantasy.

Fallout 4 Infiltrator Build - SPECIAL Stats

Agility dictates how much AP you get as well as your overall effectiveness when sneaking. Meanwhile, Perception increases your VATS accuracy, which is something players will want later on. These two can be considered thebest SPECIAL stats inFallout 4when it comes to making gun-based builds.

The SPECIAL stat allocation above reflects that of a freshly-made character. It does not include any bonuses from bobbleheads, the You’re SPECIAL book near Shaun’s crib, or any perk point that’s allocated to any of the stats. You’re free to invest points in any of the other stats based on personal preference.

The Gunslinger perk from Fallout 4

Increase the damage dealt by non-automatic pistols.

Sneak

You are harder to detect. Advanced levels prevent the triggering of traps and mines, and removes the stealth penalty of running.

Deal additional sneak attack damage with silenced weapons.

Bloody Mess

Deal more damage. Enemies have a chance to explode into a gory mess when killed.

You can store multiple critical hits for use in VATS.

Locksmith

You can pick higher-difficulty locks. When maxed, bobby pins will never break.

Hacker

You can hack higher-difficulty terminals. When maxed, you will never get locked out of terminals.

The list above shows the main perks you should get when planning aFallout 4Infiltrator build. This setup will greatly increase the damage you deal, especially when sneaking and using critical attacks via VATS. SinceGunslingerandBloody Messdon’t need any special conditions to activate, they’ll be useful even outside of stealth.

Locksmith and Hacker aren’t exactly mandatory, though they will open up tons of areas for you when exploring the wasteland, given that you know how to pick locks orhack terminals inFallout 4.

Prioritize getting these perks above everything else. If you have no other option, invest your points in SPECIAL stats or other quality-of-life perks such as Scrounger or Gun Nut. If you want to use rifles, the Rifleman perk under the Perception stat will be open to you as early as level 1.

Early on, any silenced weapon will do. You don’t strictly need to use pistols, but once you do make enough progress in the game and get the Gunslinger perk maxed out, you’ll need to use a good hand gun to scale well.

TheDelivereris one of thebest weapons inFallout 4. you’re able to get it after completingTradecraft, which is the second quest in the greater Railroad quest line. Apart from coming with a built-in suppressor, this gun also has a higher chance to hit when using VATS, and it uses 25% less AP than normal.

For armor, you can wear whatever you want. However, if you want to further improve your ability to sneak, use a full set with theShadowedmod for all pieces. This will make you even harder to spot.

While you’re exploring, keep an eye out forUS Covert Operations Manualmagazines and the Sneak Bobblehead in Dunwich Borers to become even harder to detect.
