Presenting a unique twist on the Prop Hunt game concept,Golden Lightis a bizarre survival horror FPS in which the usual scavenger hunt turns into a nightmare where the props hunt the player. It overwhelms players with gruesome, confusing visuals of different fleshy parts like teeth and eyeballs, while allowing a few comedic moments slip through by the very strange nature of the game.
The fact thatGolden Lightis so difficult to understand and certainly takes pride in making its players confused is without a doubt on purpose. The levels, weapons, and jumpscares are all procedurally generated, so no two playthroughs are alike. Of course, due to its more bloody visuals, this game isn’t for everyone, which may upset those who wanted a calmer game after theHalloween offerings on the Free Epic Games Store.
Epic is marking the third survival horror game given away for free in the last month with the inclusion ofGolden Light;bothThe Evil WithinandThe Evil Within 2were offered at no cost during the weeks of October 19 and October 26. While this was a great choice considering last month is considered “spooky season” to many, those who aren’t a fan of horror games had slim options, and will apparently continue to go without a free game for the next while.
Golden Lightcomes hot off the heels of another similar game:Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, the very game the survival horror title is replacing. While they’re in very different genres, they have one thing in common that makes them coming one after another rather interesting. Both of their premises are absurd to the point of comedy in their own ways.
Both games also use a funny gimmick to assist their premise, withTurnip Boy’s being that the titular character tears up any document he has, including his tax bill, andGolden Lightallows players to eat all the weapons they find. Eating the weapons gives them health, which may confuse players even more, as the weapons range from a simple knife to a special kind of flamethrower. It certainly helps make the two some of the more unique options on theEpic Games Store.
Those looking for strange game that thinks outside the box are in luck as long asGolden Lightis available at no extra cost on the Epic Games Store.
