Back in April, a trailer for the forthcomingSonic the Hedgehogmovie officially revealed the titular character’s design, and indeed fan response was markedly negative. That said, however bad fans believedSonic’s original movie designto be, its failings are nothing when compared to a gruesome Sonic-inspired sight that was seen on the latest episode ofSaturday Night Live, which marked Eddie Murphy’s return to the show after a 35 year absence.
In this episode, fans were treated to a sketch called Holiday Baking Championship, wherein three contestants are charged with making cakes inspired by Christmas past. One of these contestants isEddie Murphyin the roll of Mitch, and he describes playing video games with his children on Christmas mornings as one his favorite holiday memories. This is certainly quite a sweet scene painted by Murphy, but it is all undone when he reveals his cake, which is inspired by “that speedy rascal,” Sonic the Hedgehog.

“Good God, Mitch,” are the first words uttered upon theSonic the Hedgehogcake’s unveiling, and this sentiment is understandable considering the profound grotesqueness of the rendering. “Yeah, it’s bad. It’s gross. It’s real bad,” Murphy responds, and he is undeniably correct – the cake is a true nightmare that is likely to haunt anyone that has the misfortune of seeing it.
While it is possible that this gag exist entirely independently of theSonicmovie, it does seem thatSaturday Night Liveis looking to poke some fun at the much-maligned original design. The sketch’s focus on the cake’s “human teeth” is what really solidifies this idea, as the state of Sonic’s mouth in thefirstSonic the Hedgehogmovie trailerwas a big issue for many fans upon its release.
To note, the backlash prompted by the first trailer ultimately led to aredesign for Sonic, and while not everyone will love the new look, it is likely to be more inline with what many fans had hoped for. As such,Saturday Night Live’s jab may feel a bit out of date, but the intense ugliness of the Sonic cake makes the joke work even if it is not extremely topical.
Sonic the Hedgehogis scheduled to release in theaters June 01, 2025.
