In the past few months, Warner Bros. and DC have been in the spotlight for all the changes that have been made under the new Warner Bros. Discovery management. It is known that CEO David Zaslav is looking for an individual to lead the DC Extended Universe, and it seems like Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. The Rock, is not in the running.
Ever since the first promos ofBlack Adamreleased, Johnson has been promising fans that the film will change “thehierarchy of power in the DC Universe.” While those comments were obviously related to the films, many have raised the question whether Johnson is the right person for the job to also change the course of the company at large. He has been quite vocal about the DC projects in the past, and is evidently quite influential in Hollywood. But, it seems like he isn’t quite ready to be in the driver’s seat.

During theBlack Adampremiere, Johnson was asked byVarietyto share his thoughts about whether he’d want to be the DC film chief. “I think the best position I could be for DC is one as an advisor, where I can help… and I can help greatly,” he responded after a long pause. Johnson has never been one to shy away from referring to his love for the DC Comics and his optimism forthe future of the DCEU. During the premiere, he spoke about how he “grew up lovingSuper Friends, specifically Superman.” The series first premiered on ABC in September 1973 and featured DC characters, including Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. Over the years, the show included more characters and was renamed a few times as well.
Johnson has previously spoken about his draw towardsBlack Adam. In the interview, he is heard talking about how when he saw aBlack Adamcomic for the first time, it was “arresting.” After this film, he is ready tohelp shape the DCEUin whatever way possible, “including looking for and finding that right leader or leaders.” However, he doesn’t see himself as the right fit for the position.
Since the formation of Warner Bros. Discovery, there have been talks about a new era for DC films. The biggest change came in the form of thecancelation of theBatgirlfilm, which had already completed filming and was in the midst of post-production. The news came as a shock to the cast, crew, and DC fans, because the studio decided to scrapBatgirlentirely, with no plans to release it on any platform. It remains to be seen what changes the future will bring.
