A playable build ofDuke Nukem 3D’s remake has leaked online, giving fans an early taste of what’s in store. For those who don’t know,Duke Nukemis one of the most popularfirst-person shooter video game series from the 90s, created by 3D Realms and published by various companies, most notably GT Interactive and Gearbox Software. The game series follows the adventures of the titular character, Duke Nukem, as he fights aliens and other foes. It is mainly known for its over-the-top violence and crass humor.
The originalDuke Nukemgame was released in 1991 as a 2D platformer and was followed byDuke Nukem 2in 1993. However, it wasn’t until 1996’sDuke Nukem 3Dthat the series found true commercial success. The game’s use of fully three-dimensional environments and immersive first-person perspective was widely praised by gamers and critics alike.

In 2010,Duke Nukem 3D: Reloaded,a remake of the originalDuke Nukem 3Dwas revealed to be in development by Interceptor Entertainment. The updated version was supposed to use Unreal Engine 3, and theDuke Nukem 3D: Reloaded’sofficial website also went uprequesting donations to help complete the work. However, the project was put on hold shortly thereafter, with very little news coming out for the next ten years. Now, it is reported that theDuke Nukem 3Dremake build has been leaked online by the group x0r_jmp. The build is currently labeled as “test-version 0.001” and includes a handful of maps, one of which is titled “Hollywood Holocaust.”
This isn’t the first time that x0r_jmp has given a substantial leak related to theDuke Nukemfranchise - they have been doing it regularly. Most recently, the groupleaked a 1996 build ofDuke Nukem Foreverthat takes players back to the side-scrolling gameplay featured inDuke NukemandDuke Nukem 2. The leaked build contains the game files for the original game, a level editor for the prototype, and patched versions of the game that have been created to work with more recent hardware.
Back in November 2022, it was also reported that a modder is revivingDuke Nukem 3Dwith new weapons, monsters, a revamped soundtrack, increased difficulty, and plenty of other new features. A fan-maderemake of theDuke Nukem Forevergame was released in December 2022, which is free to play and features the first chapter of the game. It is safe to say that a lot of work is being done by fans to keep theDuke Nukemfranchise alive.
