Disney Pixel RPG Soft-Launching in September 2024

Yet another such project has just been unveiled in the form ofDisney Pixel RPG. The newly announced game is in the works atJapanese developer GungHo Online Entertainment, known for its work on theGrandiaandPuzzles and Dragonsfranchises, among dozens of other properties.Disney Pixel RPGwill attempt to tap into the studio’s mobile expertise, having been envisioned as a casual role-playing game that combines iconic Disney characters with auto-battling mechanics and avatar customization, among other features.

The game itself is scheduled to soft-launch in Japan on Aug 03, 2025. Its preview version will be available on both Android and iOS devices. GungHo confirmed that the upcoming title will be optimized for tablets, making full use of their extra screen real estate rather than rendering in a letterbox format.Japanese gamerswho pre-register forDisney Pixel RPGhave a chance to win a ¥10,000 Amazon gift card later this summer. GungHo has yet to confirm that its newly unveiled game is planned to launch beyond its home country, but that seems like a plausible scenario, not least because a lot ofDisney Pixel RPGpromotional materials are already presented in English.

The list of characters that have already been confirmed as part of the game’s cast include Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Ariel, Maleficent, Baymax, Stitch, Sleeping Beauty, Winnie-the-Pooh, and Genie fromAladdin. The game itself promises “slapstick strategy battles” that will require players to compose teams of three characters. Aside from a story mode,Disney Pixel RPGwill also offer Expeditions, resource-gathering quests meant to run in between playing sessions. A hub area of some sort will also be part of the package, having apparently been envisioned as a venue where players will be able to interact with their party. While the specifics of its character collection mechanics are yet to be revealed,Disney Pixel RPGseems to have all the makings of a gacha game.

The 8-bit RPG may not be the only Disney-licensed title to make its way to Android and iOS devices in the near future. According to one recent report,Disney is currently also working on a new mobile game with Sega.
