Though a good chunk of gameplay inDestiny 2is about making unique and fun builds, this wasn’t always the case. It is now possible mainly due to a lot of new gear added into the game, and there are now plenty of greatDestiny 2perks, Exotics, and mods that can be combined to make interesting builds for tackling the game’s content. Each of these components play a different role in what a given loadout can do, and mods are one of the most important factors to consider, as some of them can shape the wayDestiny 2is played from the ground up.

Combat style mods are the most game-defining of the bunch, as they bring a new layer to the mechanics ofDestiny 2, such as Elemental Wells, Charged with Light mods, andWarmind Cells. These groups of mods work best when players pick several, creating powerful combos that add a lot of potential to any build in terms of offense, defense, or utility. Adding a new group of combat style mods on top of the three existing ones would open up a lot of customization options whenThe Witch Queenexpansion drops, as it is already bringing a lot of exciting elements.

Why Destiny 2 Needs More Combat Style Mods

What makes combat style mods good is that they are often versatile with multiple purposes, such as providing players a dormant buff that can be spent to gain an active boon.Charged with Light modsallow players to use a very basic combination in the form of Taking Charge and Protective Light, which end up granting a 50 percent reduction in damage taken for several seconds when shields are depleted. This makes Protective Light a common mod in many Guardians' loadouts, but it’s far from the only one used.

Elemental Wells were recently made more viable because Warmind Cells were nerfed at the same time as Elemental Wells were buffed and provided a larger array of mods. The result is that severalDestiny 2players are melting bosses with builds like Sunbreaker Titans that use Throwing Hammers and a One-Two Punch shotgun, or taking advantage ofFont of Might and Elemental Time Dilation for sustained DPS.

BecauseThe Witch Queenis already a huge expansion, adding a new category of combat style mods instead of a few mods in existing types would be rewarding in terms of customization. Bungie has stated that customization is a key element toDestiny 2, and that is why the developer changed the way abilities and Supers work with the 30th Anniversary Pack. As such, it only makes sense to have a new dedicated mod branch to increase the number of options players have.

WhileDestiny 2is a complex game that new players may struggle with, it is also very satisfying to come up with a build and execute it successfully. Combat style mods help players do exactly that, and having new ones that use existing mechanics would be a fine addition, perhaps making them spawn expiring items like Orbs of Power or Elemental Wells for players to pick up and use. Even a set of mods that create objects like Warmind Cells would be interesting to see, especially now that those have been nerfed and disappeared from the meta. There are many ways to approach this, and Bungie cannot go wrong as long as the ultimate goal remains increased build variety.

Destiny 2is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
