Summary

Destiny 2is going through a time of change, as Bungie is adjusting its seasonal stories to better reflect the intentions behind the Lightfall expansion and address its shortcomings, all while also working on next big release - The Final Shape. This expansion is going to mark theend of the Light and Darkness saga ofDestiny 2, bringing to a close to conflict between The Traveler and The Witness, with players hoping it will live up to the hype. It’s still unclear if the saga will end with the expansion itself or with its seasons, but what is certain is that there will be more adventure for players to go on, possibly involving a new antagonist that might be a familiar face.

It’s not uncommon for Bungie to bring old characters back even after their demise, as has been the case with Taniks, an iconic enemy of humanity turned meme after his multiple returns. GivenDestiny 2’s Veil Containment lore dropsover the weeks in Season of the Deep, and given Bungie’s recent comments on how the Vex could become a much bigger threat in the post-The Final Shape era, there’s reason to believe that one character is not truly done for.

Destiny 2’s Maya Sundaresh/Lakshmi-2 Could Come Back After The Final Shape

In what is arguablyDestiny 2’s biggest Veil Containment revealso far, Chioma Esi’s audio logs revealed that her wife and well-known Ishtar Collective scientist, Maya Sundaresh, died after the foundation of what is now Neomuna, but not before making an Exo with her voice and memories that she called Lakshmi-2. The leader of one ofDestiny 2’s factions, the Future War Cult, Lakshmi-2 was never front and center of the overall plot of the game, but this quickly changed with the story told in Season of the Splicer, where she was one of the main antagonists.

Obsessed with the Vex and their simulations much like the real Maya Sundaresh was, Lakshmi-2 was foolish enough to open Vex portals within the confines of the Last City, causing chaos and death among the Eliksni. She was killed by Savathun disguised as Osiris, but it’s unclear if this was really the end for Maya Sundaresh and Lakshmi-2, considering the former died in a mysterious way while experimenting with The Veil on Neptune. Likewise,Destiny 2’s Season of the Deepdoesn’t have an answer yet regarding what Lakshmi-2 remembered of Dr. Sundaresh’s life, if anything, and it’s unclear what her actual goals were given the recent revelation.

With The Veil being described as a web of consciousness similar to the Vex network, and with Neomuna citizens being projections of the actual inhabitants, it’s not impossible that players have not seen the last of Maya Sundaresh. Considering that no one knows how she died or what she was doing when it happened, there’s a chance she could still be somewhere withinDestiny 2’s The Veil. If that’s the case, it’s unclear what her plan might be, but when one considers her obsession with the Vex and Bungie’s own statement regarding this particular enemy race, the two might be connected.

In fact, there’s a chance thatDestiny 2’s post-Light and Darkness saga will see players trying to stop a big Vex scheme with none other than Maya Sundaresh at its helm - or at least, some version of her, be it in digital or physical form. This would also make a lot of sense considering the unresolved mystery of Asher Mir, who disappeared alongside Io in the Beyond Light expansion, but was recently seen within the Vex network in Lightfall. Ultimately, even if Maya Sundaresh and Lakshmi-2 won’t return, there’s still a good chance that the next big antagonist inDestiny 2will be someone players are already familiar with given the many unfinished storylines in the series.

Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
