Activision’sCall of Dutygames are a treasure chest of memes for the video gaming community to open and share with others on the internet. Many gamers would instantly recognize the “Press F to pay respects” meme fromCall of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s PC version, which turned what should have been a solemn funeral into a source of laughter. Another popular meme from the games is the now-infamous Ghost stare, which came fromCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s campaign, wherein people used the stare Ghost gave to Soap MacTavish as a reaction (of varying degrees) to everyday situations.
To better immortalize the meme, Activision added a reference to Ghost’s stare fromCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s campaign into its multiplayer mode. According to a post from the r/ModernWarfareII subreddit, the reference took the form of a large decal that players can use to personalize their weapons. The decal is part of the Meme 141 weapons bundle, which includes blueprints for two weapons with unique iron sights and various decals and stickers. Players can expect the Ghost Stare weapon decal tocarry over fromCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2to its upcoming sequel.
Unfortunately, the weapons bundle in question comes with a price tag of around $15 instead of being free, much to players' disappointment. As a result, a player ironically usedthe Ghost Stare memeas a reaction to the revelation in the post’s comments section. Although other players are willing to buy the bundle, they are seemingly unwilling to pay the 1,400 COD points needed to get it. For players without COD points, they have to purchase the 1,000 COD points and 500 COD bundle, which are $9.99 and $4.99, respectively.
Time will tell if Activision made the right choice of locking away fan service like the Ghost Stare decal behind a price tag instead of making it available to allCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2players for free. Nevertheless, the bundle’s price tag won’t affect the meme’s popularity on the internet. But since Activision has immortalized the meme in-game, maybe it could make a version thatreveals Ghost’s actual face, too.
