Team Compositions inWuthering Wavesgenerally follow a simple formula: DPS + Sub-DPS + Healer.UnlikeGenshin Impact,Wuwa’steam compositionsare only composed of three characters (or Resonators) on a team, which is both easier and harder at the same time. Easier because it’s less time-consuming to build up three characters rather than four, and harder because each character needs to fit a role to be effective. Players cannot just throw in a random buffer like Taoqi just for kicks. Every team member’s role needs to make sense.
Consequently, this makes highly specialized characters like Mortefi – who is a Sub-DPS through and through – much more of a universally useful unit than someone like Jianxin or Taoqi. Mortefi is one of those characters players can chuck into any team composition, and he justworks. However, there are a few compositions that take full advantage of his kit.

1Jiyan + Mortefi + Verina
Jiyan is the absolute bestWuthering Wavescharacterto pair with Mortefi because of the way his Liberation (ultimate) works. When Jiyan enters the Teal Dragon state, his every single attack becomes a heavy attack, and unlike most heavy attacks, Jiyan’s HAs are incredibly fast. This, for Mortefi, is perfect since his kit revolves around taking advantage of fast attackers and heavy attacks. Jiyan does both.
The way Mortefi’s Liberation works is that it summons an autonomous turret that stays with the on-field character, firing off two bolts when the on-field character uses heavy attack and one bolt when they use basic attack.

Mortefi’s outro skill allows him to buff his incoming teammate with a 38% Heavy Attack DMG bonus, which, for Jiyan, means that his ultimate form is basically buffed by a straight 38%. Combined with the5 pcs Moonlit Cloud Echo set, Mortefi can buff Jiyan for an additional 22% ATK when he switches out.
The third slot in the party can go to any healer, but Verina takes the cake as she also doubles as an excellent buffer on par with Mortefi.

2Calcharo + Mortefi + Verina
A common misconception about Mortefi is that the main DPS to be paired with him must rely on heavy attacks to deal damage. That is not a requirement. While it does help if the main DPS uses heavy attacks as it takes advantage of his outro skill’s buff to heavy attacks (38%) and allows Mortefi’s ultimate skill to trigger twice on each heavy attack, this Liberatin also triggers once on basic attacks. And since basic attacks are always faster than heavy attacks, it balances out.
Calcharo is an excellent DPS pairing with Mortefi because he wants to rotate between heavy attacks and basic attacks both during his ultimate skill DPS windowandoutside of it. However, to get the most out of this pairing, Mortefi needs to unlock his Sequence 1 (S1), which makes his ultimate skill trigger even when the on-field character uses their skill. Which, for Calcharo, is going to be quite often.

Verina is an excellent healer inWuthering Waveswho, like Mortefi, fits into any team. In this team, her ultimate, combined with Mortefi’s ultimate, allows Calcharo to deal incredible on-field damage for the duration of his Liberation.
3Encore + Mortefi + Baizhi
Encore is a great team member for Mortefi as, in her special state, she attacks in bursts of four attacks in quick succession, allowing Mortefi’s ultimate skill to buff her damage to incredible heights. As a selfish DPS, Encore wants to stay on-field for as long as possible before she self-destructs, meaning that Mortefi can press all his buttons and disappear, leaving the field to Encore, which is what Mortefi wants to do. Encore does have a higher skill ceiling than both Jiyan and Calcharo, but the payoff is incredibly high.
Baizhi is a replacement for Verina, as she is one of the only healers in the game that isavailable to all players as a free character. If players are unable to obtain Verina, Baizhi would do just fine as well. Of course, if players have Verina, she is an all-around better choice.
