For players who want to stand out from the crowd and look dapper in every cutscene, cloaks are one of the most sought-after items inBaldur’s Gate 3. However, cloaks don’t merely serve as stylish additions to one’s outfit; many of them provide additional bonuses and effects that can turn the tides of battle, especially on harder difficulties.
The bestBG3cloaks and capes can complement specific playstyles, sometimes slotting in as the final piece ofan overpowered build. As with other items of clothing, cloaks can also be dyed to many desired colors. While it’s all well and good to know about the fine raiments players can don, it is crucial that gamers also know where to find thebest cloaks inBaldur’s Gate 3.
Updated July 27, 2025, by Joe Grantham:There is a wide variety of cloaks for players to uncover and sport in Baldur’s Gate 3, and as the gear slot can’t be filled by anything else, it makes sense for players to get one for each character they plan on using during their playthrough. Thus, with at least four required to kit out each active party member, this list has been updated to include even more cloaks for gamers to seek out and incorporate in their character builds. Whether players want to wear a cloak for style, defense, or to gain access to certain spells, there are plenty of options available.
Effects
Uncommon
The wearer gains theWetcondition. This makes them immune to Burning and resistant to Fire damage, but vulnerable to Lightning and Cold damage.
TheReverse Rain Cloakalmost looks useless, as it simply makes the character Wet. However, there are a few niche scenarios and even builds where this can come in helpful. For example, if players have no better option, and they are facing a boss who deals Fire damage, then they will take less damage. If the player has a build where they charge up Heat, this cloak could also help.
While players will need to wait till the start of Act 3 for the Reverse Rain Cloak, by which time they have hopefully found better alternatives, it is fairly easy to obtain. In fact, players simply need to fail atAkabi’s jackpot wheel, which he has rigged. He will gift the cloak as a consolation prize. Akabi is part of the Circus of the Last Days in Rivington.
When a creature with Reverberation deals damage to the wearer, they must make a Constitution Saving Throw or become Dazed.
TheThunderskin Cloakis a highly niche item that can be good with a complimentary build. This is because it will only be useful against enemies who are Reverberating, so players or their allies must have a way to inflict Reverberation. If this is possible, then affected enemies have a chance to become Dazed when attacking the wearer of the Thunderskin Cloak.
To obtain this cloak, players can simply purchase it from the drow trader Araj Oblodra on the ground floor of Moonrise Towers. It’s possible to go almost directly to Moonrise Towers when starting Act 2, so if players have a specific Thunder build to make use of this cloak, they can get it relatively early on.
When the wearer Disengages, they also create a foggy cloud that lasts for 1 turn.
Depicting the starry night sky, theCloak of Cunning Brumeis easily one of the best-looking cloaks inBG3, and it is one of the first that can be acquired. In terms of effects, it is a good defensive option as it allows players to leave a foggy cloud behind when they Disengage. This fog cloud will obscure and blind the enemy who was about to attack them, which may also help their teammates out.
To get this cloak in Act 2, players must havekept most of the Tieflings alive in the first Act, but more specifically, the mischievous child Mattis. Players will find him just inside the entrance to the Last Light Inn and he sells a few other items beyond the cloak.
Absorb elemental damage once per Short Rest. Take half damage from the next elemental attack and deal an additional 1d6 of that element type on your next attack.
Despite only coming into use once per Short Rest, theCloak of Elemental Absorptioncan make all the difference in a fight. The wearer has a chance to significantly reduce the damage they receive from an elemental attack, and then on their next attack, they will deal an extra 1d6 damage, which could finish an enemy off before they get another turn to attack. Elemental damage includes things such as Fire, Lightning, and Cold.
To get the Cloak of Elemental Absorption, players will have to find a way into Moonrise Towers, either by fighting, sneaking or the easiest option of pretending to serve the Absolute. From here they should then make their way to the second floor and find Ketheric Thorm’s chambers. The cloak can be looted from an Opulent Chest.
Having extra health is always going to be a blessing, even if it’s just temporary, and that’s exactly what theVivacious Cloakprovides. The wearer will gain 8 Temporary HP for 4 turns after casting a spell while in melee, and this can make quite the difference onBG3’sharder difficulties, where every bit of health counts. Players should bear in mind, however, that Temporary HP can only be gained from one source at a time.
To enshroud themselves in the Vivacious Cloak, players will want to enter the Grand Mausoleum during Act 2. After entering the Mausoleum, one can simply head east, and the cloak can be found waiting inside a chest.
Flaming Shroud:A creature that damages the wearer within 2 m/ 7 ft receivesBurning, taking 1d4 Fire damage per turn.
While some of thebest cloaks inBG3require players to actively make use of their effects, with theCindermoth Cloak, players can simply sit back and watch their enemies set themselves on fire. When an enemy successfully attacks the wearer of this cloak within 2 m/ 7 ft, they will acquire the Burning effect, meaning that they take 1d4 Fire damage per turn.
To get their hands on this burning-hot cloak, players will need to kill Aelis Siryasius in the Lower City Sewers. Aelis is hard to miss as he is surrounded by many Grease Elementals, Grease Mephits, and Greaseballs. The ensuing fight will be rather explosive, though, so players should certainly come prepared, and having resistance to Fire damage can be a lifesaver.
Rare
TheWavemother’s Cloakcan be a great option, but if players take it into the wrong fight, it can also be a death sentence. It grants resistance to Fire damage and completely stops the wearer from Burning. Thus, if players know they will be facing, for example, some ofthe best Fire spells inBG3, this cloak will prove to be incredibly useful.
However, it also makes the wearer vulnerable to both Lightning and Cold damage, meaning that they will take double the damage. While the suitability of the Wavemother’s Cloak is based on a case-by-case scenario, players won’t have to make these decisions until Act 3, when it is found in the Lower City. More specifically, it is found in the Water Queen’s House, inside a chest.
The Shadow Itself:Once per turn, when the wearer kills an enemy, they shroud themselves in primeval darkness to become Invisible for 2 turns.
The Deathstalker Mantleis an incredibly interesting cloak to use as it causes the wearer to turn invisible after securing a kill. This allows players to pull off all sorts of tricks, from sneaking away on super low health to repositioning behind enemies who are least expecting it. The invisibility lasts for two turns, and yet, this effect can be used once every turn, allowing for almost constant stealth.
The only catch with The Deathstalker Mantle is that it will only be given to the Dark Urge, and even then, the player will have to murder Alfira. Once it is in their possession, nothing stops them from granting it to other characters. It is given by Sceleritas Fel, a fiend who is integral tothe Dark Urge’s past.
Very Rare
Crusader’s Mantle (Lvl 3 Spell):Radiate a holy power that emboldens nearby allies. Their weapon attacks deal an additional 1d4 Radiant damage. Once per Short Rest.
Unless players already have access to the Crusader’s Mantle spell, then theMantle of the Holy Warrioris a great cloak to pick up for one member of the party. While this is all the cloak grants,the Paladin spellis rather good as it can buff up all nearby allies to deal some extra Radiant damage.
The downside, however, is that players will need to wait until Act 3 to don this holy cloak, as it can only be purchased, quite appropriately, from the Vicar inside the Stormshore Tabernacle. This is a location inside the Lower City, near the Basilisk Gate waypoint.
Caustic Reprisal:Whenever a creature deals melee damage to the wearer, that creature takes 1d4 Acid damage.
Seeing as many common enemies use melee attacks inBaldur’s Gate 3, players will get plenty of use out of theFleshmelter Cloakif they choose to wear it. This is because, for each attack, this horrifying cloak will return 1d4 Acid damage to the attacker.
Players with a desire to see their enemies' flesh melt can find the Fleshmelter Cloak in the House of Healing Morgue inside a Gilded Chest. While this is similar to the Cindermoth Cloak, it is arguably superior, as enemies are less likely to be resistant to Acid damage. On top of that, it can also be found in an earlier act.
