There’s an FPS for just about every gamer’s taste. Whether offering up meticulous tactics, a historical simulation, over-the-top gore, a colorful fantasy setting, realistic destructible cover, or a heaping helping of polygons, the first-person shooter genre has players covered.

Psychedelic arcade shooterPost Voidturns everything up to 11. Players sprint, slid, and jump through boxy, procedurally generated corridors, blasting eerie monsters while accompanied by a thumping soundtrack and more flashing lights than a dozen discos. The mechanics are simple, but the gameplay is lightning fast, and beginners will need all the help they can get to come out alive. Here are some essential tips for players new toPost Void.

8Speed Is Life

Mechanically and strategically, everything happens fast inPost Void, making it quite different fromslow-burn tactical shooters.Bullets move in the blink of an eye, and the player speeds through levels as if wearing rocket skates. The player’s health actively depletes, and if it isn’t replenished, death comes in a matter of seconds.

To avoid this, the player must kill enemies to replenish their life. Hurrying through the level isn’t just for aesthetic effect or to try to beat one’s personal best time:it’s the only way to stay alive.Never dawdle for too long in one area. Kill and move on, and if enemies can be killed without stopping, all the better.

7Pick The Right Upgrades

At the end of every level, the player will be offered a choice of upgrades. Some are better than others, but ultimately the deciding factor is one’s playstyle. Getting slowed down by enemy collisions too much? Take Ghost. Sick of dying to the timer in the last seconds of the run? Take added life.

Slow Bullets is one of the best choices for beginners, since it slows down enemy projectiles considerably, giving the player time to dodge attacks they would have otherwise been hit by, thus keeping them alive much longer. Rubber Bullets are another helpful upgrade for beginners since bullets that miss the target will bounce off walls and potentially strike an enemy, making even missed shots valuable.

6Don’t Get Cornered

Post Void’sprocedurally generated maps often spit out dead ends, and getting stuck in one of them for even a moment can be enough to kill the player if there are enemies nearby. Dead ends are especially dangerous if the player has not cleared the path to that point, because multiple enemies can then swarm their position, slowing the player with their bodies and tearing through the player’s health before they can escape.

It might not bea graphically demanding game, butPost Void’svisual style is overwhelming, especially at first, soit can be hard to survey one’s surroundings and plot the best route, especially since the player often sees new corridors for barely a second before sprinting by them. Focus on moving forward, and if trapped in a corner, run.

5Train For Accuracy

The Pistol that players start with in Act 1 has a relatively high rate of fire. That fact, combined with the game’s lightning pace, narrow confines, and infinite ammo, means it’s tempting to just spam the fire button in the hopes that enemies go down. “Spray and pray” is not the best strategy, however.

Even weak enemies can take multiple bullets before going down, but a single headshot will kill them.Being less reckless with shots and taking the time to think about where one is firing will pay dividends since the player will be able to drop multiple enemies in a fraction of the time. Even when using the Uzi the player should be conscious of where they are firing, as they can significantly increase their survivability and score by becoming a better shot.

4Know Your Weapons

Allthe best first-person shootershave interesting arsenals. InPost Void, the Pistol, Uzi, Shotgun, and Knife all have their own advantages and disadvantages. At first, it’s advantageous to experiment with every weapon, even those that seem weaker than others, as they all have unique strengths and weaknesses.A player who knows their weapon will get much further than one who doesn’t.

The Pistol has a solid rate of fire and 6-shot capacity, making it a good general-purpose weapon. With its limited range, slow speed, and 2-shot capacity, the Shotgun has its drawbacks, but it can kill enemies with a single blast no matter what part of the body it hits, even killing multiple enemies if they are bunched together. The Uzi boasts the highest rate of fire, and though its body shots are weak, recoil often leads to inadvertent headshots anyway. The Knife cannot be upgraded and forces the player into melee but ignores ammo and can one-shot enemies with its charged slash.

3Stay Mobile

Sprinting around isn’t the player’s only option. Jumping and sliding are also possible, and the player will need to know how to do both if they hope to make it to the end of the level, never mind the top of the Leaderboard.

Sliding will allow the player to avoid a number of attacks, ducking beneath enemy projectiles and closing the distance to finish them off. When paired with strafing, sliding is a fantastic way to close the distance on dangerous enemies. Sliding and strafing are also the only realistic means of getting value out of the Knife since they’ll keep the player from getting torn to pieces before they can do damage.

2Hit The Ground Running

Post Voidis aggressively fast, and it doesn’t hesitate for an instant before throwing everything it has at the player, one reason this isn’tan FPS for kids.Because enemies can spawn practically on top of the player at the start of the level and can shred through the player’s health in an instant,it’s not unheard of for a player to die four seconds into a run.

To prevent this, the player needs to be in motion, picking their route and finding their targets the moment the game begins.Post Voidpunishes hesitation harshly, and the only way to overcome that is to practice, flinging oneself into its procedurally generated mazes again and again until one’s skill is honed.

1Visual Settings Can Be Altered

One of the biggest selling points forPost Voidis unquestionablyits art style, a pixelated nightmarethat looks like a kaleidoscope threw up onDoom. One of the game’s signature visual elements is the near-constant use of flashing lights. For players with sensitivity to such lights, the game will feel oppressive if not outright unplayable.

Thankfully, the game’s many flashing lights can be disabled in the Settings menu.Though doing so is certainly a departure from the game’s artistic vision, it can mean the difference between a player being able to dive into this hectic arcade shooter and them having to walk away, so the option to disable flashing lights is a definite win for inclusivity.
