Summary

Runepowder is not to be trifled with, as oneBaldur’s Gate 3player (and their entire party) found out the hard way just how destructive a single barrel can be. TheUnderdark inBaldur’s Gate 3is one of the most memorable locations in the game, with plenty of good loot to be found in its depths. While the majority of the main plot in the Underdark concerns rescuing a True Soul, the path to get there can be accomplished in a plethora of ways. Arguably, the most straightforward option is dealing with Philomeen.

This particular gnome can be found next to a barrel of extremely volatile runepowder, and making the wrong move has caused the end of manyHonour Mode playthroughs inBaldur’s Gate 3. However, the barrel that Philomeen guards can also be stolen from her, which not only neutralizes the threat she poses but also grants players a powerful explosive.

Though the explosive is usually used to free True Soul Nere inBaldur’s Gate 3, the game doesn’t stop players from using it in alternative situations. The Underdark famously has a boss that is hard to kill through conventional means, which is why Sen-Kanashimi had the idea of taking down Grym using the runepowder barrel. After dropping the barrel within range of the hammer, next to the boss itself, this boldBaldur’s Gate 3player pressed the lever hoping that the ensuing explosion would dismantle the Eternal Protector of the Forge, but the runepowder proved to be too volatile.

As seen in the video, it destroyed the entire party and forced Sen-Kanashimi to seemingly restart theirbattle with Grym inBaldur’s Gate 3. The boss, on the other hand, survived the explosion relatively unscathed – an unsurprising outcome, as only lava can expose the construct’s weakness. That being said, Sen-Kanashimi’s unconventional thinking should be commended, even if the attempt ended up a failure. WhileBaldur’s Gate 3offers other situations where runepowder can come in handy, it’s a shame that a huge barrel only makes a small dent against the Eternal Protector of the Forge.

Ultimately, if players want tocraft the Adamantine items inBaldur’s Gate 3, they will likely need to employ the standard method of defeating Grym. While the Underdark can be entirely skipped if players opt to travel through the Mountain Pass, it’s generally advised to do both zones before moving onto the Shadow-Cursed Lands, as the extra levels and loot can make a huge difference in Act 2.
