Avatar: The Way of Water director James Cameron has made it known that he’s a fan of more traditional filmmaking and the theatre-going experience. So it should be no surprise that Cameron has once again spoken against streaming, instead choosing to extol the virtues of theaters.

Cameron is fresh offAvatar 2,which has earned over $2 billion at the box office. He’s earned the title of a living legend, and it’s safe to say the man knows what he’s talking about regarding cinema. However, he is also prone to speaking his mind in an unfiltered manner, and his previous statements have gotten him in hot water with certain corners of the internet.

While at the Golden Globes,Varietyinterviewed Cameron, who shared his thoughts onAvatar: The Way of Water’s success while commenting on the current state of cinema. Cameron said that the film’s financial success was secondary to the point. “I’m not thinking of it in those terms. I’m thinking of it in the terms of we’re going back to theaters around the world," Cameron said. “They’re even going back to theaters in China where they’re having this big COVID surge. We’re saying as a society, ‘We need this! We need to go to theaters.’ Enough with the streaming already! I’m tired of sitting on my ass.”

Cameron, who previously said he didn’t want to hearwhining aboutAvatar: The Way of Water’s runtime, also gave fans some advice for theater etiquette. “They’re missing the point,” Cameron said of people who look at their phones in theaters. “When we go to the movies we make a deal with ourselves to have undivided attention for a couple of hours. It’s about immersing yourself…choosing to commit to that ahead of time.”

Cameron is known for speaking his mind. Last year, he received some criticism for voicing his opinion thatMarvel and DC characters act like they’re in college. Cameron has also been somewhat critical of the saturation of superhero films on the market, which has rubbed fans of that genre the wrong way.

Still, Cameron’s commitment to his beliefs is steadfast. The futureAvatarfilms will likely be just as committed to the theatrical experience, and Cameron has some exciting plans for the future of Pandora. For example, he has stated thatAvatar 3will expose a darker side to the Na’vi.
