New rumors have recently cropped up concerningAssassin’s Creed Ragnarok, the supposed next foray for the franchise into the Viking era. These rumors have reiterated information stated in the past, such as a choice between male and female characters (who are either way named Jora), a reveal forthcoming at the rumored PS5 event in February, and more, yet it did not stop there. It took it a step further with newAssassin’s Creed Ragnarokgameplay details such as a Berserker Mode, which allows the player to wield magical elements, and a 4-player co-op mode.
Details are scarce concerning how thisAssassin’s Creedco-op modewould work exactly, but it was compared toGhost Recon Wildlands. This time around, co-op players would be taking on the role of Jora’s presumably Viking or Assassin allies during their journey, which, if pulled off right, would be impressive. The co-op mode forWildlandsis nothing to scoff at, but many may be wondering if a 4-player co-op mode should come back inAssassin’s Creed Ragnarok.

Case in point: it was hardly ever present in the franchise. Outside the Wolfpack multiplayer game mode found inAssassin’s Creed 3andBlack Flag, which was in its PvP mode as training only, the only game to ever includeco-op wasAssassin’s Creed Unity. InUnity, players could join up to complete Brotherhood missions, where every player was technically “Arno,” but others saw reskinned NPCs instead of a pack of the protagonists. There were randomized missions that could be played for loot with rewards based on stealth, but ultimately, this co-op mode made no splash for the franchise.
The very fact thatSyndicate,Origins, andOdysseyavoided this feature speaks to how little it mattered (though, due to Ubisoft’s development cycle, it could also be attributed to how it all lines up). It could have also been worsened by the abysmal receptionAssassin’s Creed Unityreceived, but despiteUnity’s “positive review bombing"when fans returned to play it after the Notre Dame fire, there’s little to nothing about its co-op mode. Ultimately, it proved to be a gimmick, one that caught little to no traction moving forward with the franchise.
As such, the simple answer here is…no,Assassin’s Creed Ragnarokshouldn’t have a co-op mode in a vein similar to this. The results would almost be inevitably be the same for this co-op mode, but that’s not to say a better improved system should be ruled out. IfAC Ragnarok’sco-op mode was indeed similar toGhost Recon Wildlands, that could be something interesting to see.
Essentially, the comparison implies that fans of the franchise could complete story missions together, not just random spin-off missions. It also implies that the co-op mode would at least have some context befitting the time era, serving less as a gimmick and more as a core gameplay feature, which is harder to pass judgement on. If this proved to be the case andAssassin’s Creed Ragnarokstill maintained the forward innovations ofOriginsandOdyssey, then it could be introducing its own unique element into the game alongside the RPG features. The very thought of playing as 4vikings inAC: Ragnarok’s Berserker mode seems enticing enough to at least warrant giving this a chance; after all, it is also implied by the comparison that this could be still completed as a traditional single-player game, leaving it as an option for those who want to play with friends.
Ultimately, it’s important to remember that this is currently one of many rumors forAssassin’s Creed Ragnarok. Whether or not it pans out depends on Ubisoft’s plans and the veracity of the rumor, but regardless of whether or not this proves to be true, hopefullyRagnarokkeeps up the hot streak set forth byAssassin’s Creed OriginsandAssassin’s Creed Odyssey.
