There are so many ways to experienceOblivionthanks to the modding community, and a recent mod makes it so that the game’s sewer rats cuss whenever the player is nearby. Featuringone of the best Bethesda step-out moments,The Elder Scrolls 4was a visual marvel when it released back in 2006. It may have aged a lot over the course of nearly 17 years, but it’s a fondly remembered entry in the long-running fantasy RPG series.

Much of this fondness lies in it being anElder Scrollsgame with superior side questswhen compared to the main story.Oblivionis noteworthy for the Dark Brotherhood guild quests, particularly the “Whodunit?” mission, in which the player enters a home for a fun murder mystery evening. The twist, however, is that the player is tasked with actually killing all of the occupants locked inside. It’s gone down as one of the best side quests in the whole franchise. However, the game is also beloved for the myriad of mods that help to keep things fresh.

For instance, Nexus Mods user DavaScript recently uploaded “Swearing Rats” forOblivion, which essentially gives the game’s rats the power of speech. Only, instead of being able to have a pleasant conversation with the large rodents, they can only swear at the player. According to the description, the creator simply swapped out the vanilla rat sounds for ones that are based on aDuke Nukemprank from way back in the day. The mod takes the audio from this and inserts it intoTES4, giving the rats very angry dialog.

Over the years, there have been plenty ofinteresting mods forOblivioncreated by the community. There have been some that significantly improved the now dated visuals, while others have changed up the landscape, such as by rebuilding the destroyed city of Kvatch. Then there’s DavaScript’s mod, which is, as they themselves say, just something silly. The fact that it’s also based on a really old prank video is what makes this that extra bit intriguing.

Speaking of mods, arecent trailer forSkyblivionhas been doing the rounds, with the project now having a release year. For those who don’t know,Skyblivionis a fan remake ofThe Elder Scrolls 4done inSkyrim’s engine. It’s taken the team years to complete, but it looks as though the end is in sight, even if still a couple of years away. However, it’s unlikely there’ll be swearing rats in that version.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivionis available on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.
