Theproduction forHouse of Guccibegan in February 2021 and didn’t wrap until months later in May. It’s safe to say that the process of shooting was lengthy. Driver stated during an interview with W Magazine, “After 14 hours of being a Gucci, I was ready for it to be over. In general, I leave jobs immediately. I haven’t been to a wrap party sinceGirls.I just want to get the character out of my system and go home.”
Driver opened up in an interview about how challenging it was to play a character whose own morals and way of living are completely alien to who he is in real life. “In some ways,House of Gucciwas the most difficult. I do not live in the same world as Maurizio Gucci," Driver said. “The way he picks up things that are valuable and discards them, the way he is the most elegant man - those qualities were interesting to think about.”
Despite the process of stepping into the character of Maurizio Gucci being somewhat gruesome for Driver, he seems to have thoroughly enjoyed working withdirector Ridley Scott. He expressed, “I fucking love him. He uses four cameras at a minimum, and it’s like theater-in-the-round. He draws his own storyboards, and the productions move very fast. He doesn’t lose momentum over a meaningless detail.”
Driver’s more introverted personality or perhaps even method of acting seems to require lots of isolation in order to recharge for the next day of filming. Yet, it seems as though his desire to leave the project so quickly had more to do with just how much time he was forced to spend in his character’s mentality in order to give a solid performance.
