Nintendo is a family-friendly company that occasionally puts out dark content. It doesn’t have a lot of first-party horror games to speak of though. Its biggest has to beLuigi’s Mansion, which is getting a new game via a remake ofLuigi’s Mansion 2in 2024.

It’s fun to suck up ghosts and hear that familiar music throughout, but here’s the big question. IsLuigi’s Mansionscary? Not really but neither of these other eight games came out onSwitchin 2023. However, they could get a little spookier if developers made some Halloween-based content for the holiday. There has been no news yet, but that can change at any time.

8Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And Lost Demon

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demonwas a surprise this year as it ditched the series’ patented action gameplay for something less complicated. This prequelwas about Bayonettalearning to use her witch powers as a young girl. She wasn’t as gifted yet, so she was accompanied by a demon that possessed her stuffed animal, Cheshire.

The series has featured a variety of fun costumes before like Samus’ Varia Suit, or Princess Peach’s dress. A variety of costumes from Nintendo games could be fun for a Halloween treat.

7Disney Illusion Island

Disney Illusion Islandwas a four-player co-op gamethat featured Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy as playable characters. The four heroes came upon this mysterious island by accident and decided to help some locales upon arriving.

It was an inviting Metroidvania for the whole family could enjoy thanks to the lax difficulty. Mickey has had a plethora of Halloween cartoons in his illustrious career such as “Lonesome Ghosts.” It would be fun if another island popped up with levels based on that cartoon and a few others.

6Fire Emblem Engage

It’s kind of hard to believe thatFire Emblem Engagewas released this year since January seems like eons ago. The big hook of this latest entry was that rings housed characters from the entireFire Emblemseriesin them from Marth to Roy. New characters could fuse with the legacy heroes to create powerful combos.

Nintendo has released a good amount of updates and DLC for the past games but nothing major has come up in a while forFire Emblem Engage. What better time to add some spooky costumes or a map or two than for Halloween?

5Have A Nice Death

Have a Nice Deathputs players in the role of Death himself. Life as the Grim Reaper is not as easy or as fun as it looks as there is a lot of paperwork involved. That is until one faithful day when Death had to step away from his desk to deal with a rising revolt.

This roguelike coulduse an update and the game itself feels ripe for Halloween content since the Grim Reaper is a popular costume in our reality. The developers could add a mini-campaign filled with pumpkin demons or just give Death some fun new costumes.

4Master Detective Archives: Rain Code

Master Detective Archives: Rain Codeis the latest adventure game from the minds behind theDanganronpaseries. A young detective, Yuma, wakes up with amnesia on a train and slowly has to regain his memories as he solves a series of overarching cases for a detective agency. Also, Yuma has a partner via Shinigami who is a ghost.

Since players are a detective working for an agency, it seems easy enough to squeeze a new case into the game. Maybe it could involve a murder at a Halloween party with people dressed as characters from theDanganronpaseries.

3Pikmin 4

Pikmin 4blew up in a way that Nintendo probably could not predict. The reviews were great and player retention was high. Unfortunately, that retention has since dropped off since Nintendo hasn’t added anything new to the game.

One of the new additions to the series inPikmin 4was the nighttime missions. Seems like a perfect setting to have some spooky shenanigans happen. Maybe evensome Pumpkin Pikmincould join the fight.

2Sea Of Stars

Sea of Starsis an homage to many retro RPGs but the two biggest have to beChrono TriggerandSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Players begin as a group of two destined warriors who have to save the world using their powers of the moon and the sun through turn-based combat.

Spoiler incoming: there is a big twist inSea of Starswhich connects it to the developer’s first game,The Messenger. Portals and the multiverse are real meaning that anything is possible, so a fun Halloween side adventure could be possible.

1The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomhas to be Nintendo’s biggest game so far and it is impossible to think any upcoming games could topple it. Even the twoMariogames probably don’t have a chance although they will certainly sell.

ForTears of the Kingdom, people are still into it as they figure out new ways to manipulate the building mechanics. The game is massive, so it’s hard to think of anything substantial that a Halloween update could provide. Maybe Nintendo could just drop in some costumes, speaking of Mario.
